Six-wheeled Mars Rover Opportunity is declared dead by NASA….| Hi-Tech-Blog |

Today,in this article, we would discuss about the NASA’s Mars Rover Opportunity which has been officially declared dead! Thomas zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said “Our beloved Opportunity remained silent. With a sense of deep appreciation and gratitude, I declare the Opportunity mission as complete.” Unfortunately, Opportunity lost power in a dust storm last June, and all efforts to make contact have failed.

About the Robot…….

This Mars Rover was actually designed in such a way, that scientists estimated it’s life span to be 90

days only. But the survival of this robot on Mars, shocked all scientists!! This plucky robot operated on the red planet for more than 14 years…!! The robot traveled distance of 25 miles, sent pictures which totally changed the way of thinking of all scientists towards Mars.
This robot was actually launched to Mars in the year 2004 and Rover principal investigator Steven W. Squyres said shortly after landing, “I will attempt no science analysis because it looks like nothing I’ve ever seen before in my life. We knew, going into this, at a fine scale the texture of Meridiani Planum was unlike almost anything else on Mars. As we had expected..”. Meridiani Planum is actually the area where the robot landed at first in Mars and the area from where scientists  first saw the pictures of Mars planet.

How the Opportunity lost..?

On May 30, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter detected a dust storm heading towards the Opportunity’s location near the equator. And this storm  was active till next few days. The amazing fact of this storm is that scientists described it as the most intense storm ever observed in Mars and in June 10, it covered more than 15.8 million square miles!! 15.8 million square miles is equivalent to the combined area of North America and Russia..!! And, this storm was so powerful that it had blocked the sunlight totally, converting from day to night for the Opportunity which was at the centre of the storm. She was last heard on June 10 according to the scientists.

There was another storm back in the year of 2007 in Mars, where the Opportunity survived! That was planet wide dust storm, but that storm sucked much energy of the Opportunity and with small power left, unfortunately Opportunity was defeated in the next storm which we discussed above..!! But scientists tried one last attempt to ping the rover, and among them Keri Bean helped to send the last radio signal but all efforts were in vain!! She felt losing Opportunity is like someone’s death in a family..!!

She said, “Me, personally, it’s been real hard because this is a project I’ve worked on for over a third of my life at this point. And so just to lose all that all of a sudden is really very tough to accept. But at least I’m convinced that  it was Mars that killed her and not like she failed due to system or engine failure. It was Mars. And I feel like that’s really the only appropriate death for her at this point.
