The world's largest supercomputer turned on for the first time!!

 Today,in this blog,we would discuss about the only one,that is the largest brain like supercomputer switched on for the first time!

This largest supercomputer named 'The SpiNNaker Machine' which is the short form of Spiking Neural Network Architecture, has been designed and developed in The University of Manchester, UK. The main thing about this largest supercomputer is that it can model more biological neurons in real time. No other machine in this whole world can create more biological neurons than this largest brain like supercomputer.

 The term 'brain like' is been mentioned here which simply depicts that  this largest supercomputer was designed to work in the same manner as the human brain does its work. And this largest supercomputer has been switched on for the first time.


  The largest supercomputer has been designed in such a way that it can perform more than 200 million actions per second without facing any difficulties. And,the amazing thing about this largest supercomputer is that, it has 100 million transistors, in each of its chips. For developing this largest supercomputer, it took 20 years in conception and investment of 15 million pounds and then 10 years for its construction,with initial build up starting from way back in 2006!!

 We mentioned a fact above that this largest supercomputer can model more biological neurons in real life. Now,what's  biological neurons?


  Biological neurons are the basic brain cells present in the nervous system that communicate primarily by emitting spikes of pure electrochemical energy.
  These neurons are responsible for transmitting information throughout the brain to the other functioning parts. There are billions of small neurons in our brains  which take part in transmitting information. When information reaches at the end of first neuron,it generates an electrochemical energy which is then recieved by the starting point of second neuron. And this process goes on and on to third,fourth,fifth,... until the information reaches its destination. We won't discuss any further or we might end up in biology article about neurons.


  So,as we discussed that SpiNNaker is the largest supercomputer in the world. It is also unique from a way,as it doesn't communicate by sending large amount of information from one point to another,just like the other traditional computers. 



Stebe Furber,who discovered the initial idea for this computer,said,"SpiNNaker completely rethinks the way conventional computers work. We've essentially created a machine which works more like a human brain which is extremely exciting". Further he added,"The ultimate objective for the project has always been a million cores in a single computer for real time brain modelling application, and we have now achieved it!".


   One of the funny fundamental uses of this largest brain like supercomputer is to help neuroscientist better understand how the human brain works. As Furber said," Neuroscientist can now use SpiNNaker to help unlock some of the secrets of how human brain works by running large scale simulations. It also works as real time neural simulation that allows robotiscists to design large scale neural networks into mobile robots which can move with flexibility and low power! ".
